Tropical Plant Biotechnology
Genetic improvement of the tropical staple root-crop, cassava (Manihot esculenta), for the benefit of resource-poor farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. This research focuses principally on the biochemical and molecular analyses of post-harvest events in storages roots. The objective is to increase the shelf-life of the harvested roots.
Candidate gene constructs are being tested in transgenic cassava plants.
We are also investigating the distribution and evolution of transposable retroelements in the cassava genome.
Silk Road Hybrid Roses
Cultural and genetic analysis of the distribution and transfer of remontancy (repeat flowering) in roses from China to Europe via the Middle East during the past 2,500 years.
